Have you ever read something and felt its truth for you?...a friend reposted a quote on Facebook yesterday...a quote Arianna Huffington had posted...
"If you walk into a dark, black hole with love and joy, you'll find love and joy there. If you walk in with fear and anger, you'll find fear and anger. Go into situations with what you want to find there." —John-Roger
Yes, I thought as I read this...the answer to almost any conundrum I might experience...my intention...or lack of one...
This led me to consider my reaction to art...for example, when I look at art, do I find beauty when I intend it?...am I ever surprised at my reaction?...do I ever expect art to be beautiful and find it otherwise?...yes, to all of these questions...
I have been fortunate to see a lot of great...and not so great...art recently...while I've been on Whidbey Island...there are several artists whose work I really love...one in particular is David Price...
He has been creating encaustic paintings for eight years now...I fell hard for his work the very first time I saw it hanging in the dining room at the Inn at Langley...I remember the exact moment I set eyes on one of his encaustics...a time when I had no intention about liking it...or not liking it....
Now, the technique fascinates me...especially as it relates to photography...and because it can be used to create an unrivaled depth and subtlety...Mr. Price's pieces...in particular...have a soft, ethereal, timeless quality...when I see them...and allow myself to sink into them...I feel transported to another place...somewhere just outside my conscious awareness...into an undefinable...and especially peaceful...state of being...a place where intention ceases to exist...
I wonder...if I had never before experienced this undefinable feeling, would his artwork still evoke it?...I think so...
Maybe that's his intention...
