Today in his remarks, our President commented that "we are all more free" today because of the Supreme Court's decisions...about California's Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)...
If only we were all more free...period...
Instead, his administration has acted in almost every other regard to curtail our freedoms...to curtail justice...to curtail democracy...and lest anyone has forgotten, his administration acted first to uphold the marriage definition of one man and one woman...it was only after a lower court decision that he changed course...
If you are celebrating today...as I am...please also be mindful that we now have laws in place...being appealed right now...laws that the Obama administration pushed hard to enact...laws that if upheld, will allow anyone to be imprisoned indefinitely...laws that can be used to intervene in labor strikes...in public demonstrations...in acts of civil disobedience...laws that can put private citizens in military custody...
So, yes, in one important area of public life, there is about to be more freedom in one State in the Nation...but I will not praise President Obama's remarks without first contrasting them...against his inaction on this issue in general...against his initial action on this issue when he became President...and against his many other actions in broader policy areas...actions that have undermined democracy and significantly reduced our personal freedoms...
